''Some songs don't start with music. They start with a glance.''

.

.

The glass walls of the BigHit studio shone under the soft afternoon light. Inside, cables and wires spread across the floor, filled with the faint hum of a running mic as a half finished melody floated in the air.

Kim Taehyung sat by the console, his fingers tapping against the desk , eyes fixed on the monitor in front of him. His brown hair fell over his forehead, and his silver rings caught the light each time he moved.

To anyone watching, he looked calm -maybe too calm- but inside, his thoughts were anything but peaceful.

The door opened with a loud creak, and just like that the silence ended.

''Hyuuuung!'' Jeon Jungkook's voice cut through the stillness, too cheerful and just a little too dramatic. He walked in with a bubble tea in one hand and his phone in the other, his soft hair was messy from rehearsal and his hoodie half-zipped.

Taehyung didn't even look up. ''You're late.''

Jungkook grinned, his bunny teeth on display as dropped his bag on the couch. ''You sound like a teacher.''

''I feel like one,'' Taehyung muttered, adjusting the volume slider. ''Especially when the student keeps forgetting what time practice starts.''

''Come on, Hyung.'' Jungkook moved closer, his voice playful as usual. ''You missed me, didn't you?''

Taehyung's fingers froze on the keyboard for a split second. He glanced up, his eyes cool. ''Missed the noise? Not really.''

Jungkook placed a hand on his chest, pretending to be hurt. ''Ouch. My heart, Hyung.''

Taehyung just sighed, though the corner of his mouth twitched into a small, hidden smile that quickly vanished.

This was how it always was with them. Taehyung was the calm one who thought before he spoke, while Jungkook was an energetic bunny - chaos wrapped in a hoodie, filled withย  teasing words and quick laughter.

They were opposites, yet the room felt too still when one wasn't there.

The company had announced it earlier that morning about a 'Special Duet Project.' It was a surprise collaboration between two members, and when the news dropped, the internet literally exploded.

Taehyung ร— Jungkook.

Two of the most popular members of the band, now paired for a love-themed song, and just like that, the group chat had gone wild.

Jimin sent dozen's of heart and smirk emoji's. Hobi -ever the sunshine- spammed a 100 dancing GIFs. Jin asked who came up with the ''genius'' idea.

Suga muted the chat after a unbothered, "Good luck," and Namjoon, as usual said, ''Just don't burn the studio down, please!''

But Taehyung had just stared at the message, awfully silent. Jungkook, of course, had laughed like a man who already knew it would be fun.

Now, standing in front of the mic, Jungkook slipped on his headphones and adjusted the stand. ''So, what's the song about again?''

Taehyung looked up from his notes. ''It's about love. The kind that's unsure but feels like a game.''

''Perfect.'' Jungkook's lips curved into a grin. ''So, basically us.''

Taehyung's pen paused. ''Us?''

''Yeah, Hyung! You are the serious, mysterious guy and I'm the prince of chaos.'' Jungkook winked. ''It's practically written for us''.ย

Taehyung just sighed again, hiding the smile threatening to form. ''Focus, Jungkook. Try not to turn this into a comedy show.''

''No promises...'' Jungkook whispered, just loud enough for him to hear.

The recording began. The melody was slow and emotional, paired with soft drums, a gentle piano line, and a heartbeat beneath every note.

Jungkook's voice filled the room as he sang with ease, his voice moving with the rhythm. Every lyric rolled off his tongue like he was expressing his feelings directly to Taehyung.

When Taehyung joined in, their voices blended beautifully -a flawless honey combo- but it wasn't just a good harmony. It was something else...ย too close, yet too real.

Every time Taehyung's deep voice slipped into the chorus, Jungkook's grin would falter for just a second.

''Why so serious, Hyung?'' Jungkook asked after a take, leaning against the glass wall. ''You act like this is a real love song or something.''

Taehyung looked up, his eyes unreadable. ''It is a love song."ย

Jungkook blinked, his plump lips parting slightly. ''Oh.''

''Try not to forget the bridge again,'' Taehyung said quietly, turning back to his notes.

Jungkook's cheeks flushed pink. ''I didn't forget-''

''You did,'' Taehyung interrupted softly, almost amused. ''Right after I sang.''

They took a break as the room filled with the quiet hums of machines and the faint echoes of track.

Taehyung leaned back in his chair, stretching his arms, while Jungkook sat cross-legged on the floor, sipping his drink.

''You're too focused, Hyung,'' Jungkook said suddenly. ''You should relax more.''

Taehyung raised an eyebrow at him. ''And you should focus more.''

''That's boring.''

''That's necessary.''

Jungkook smirked. ''You're no fun.''ย

Taehyung looked at him, his voice soft but firm. ''You flirt with everyone, Jungkook... but you never mean it, do you?''ย

The question came out of nowhere, catching Jungkook off guard. He blinked, a teasing smile playing on his lips, though his chest felt strangely tight. ''And if I said... I did?'' he asked, his tone light, but his eyes were searching.

Taehyung's gaze didn't waver. ''Then I'd tell you to stop playing games you can't win.''

With that, he stood up, collecting his notes, and walked out of the booth. The sound of the door closing echoed softly, leaving Jungkook sitting there alone. His heart beating louder than the backing track behind him.

For once, he didn't smile. He just looked at the empty doorway, his voice barely a whisper. ''Who said I wanted to win, Hyung?''

A pause. ''Maybe I just wanted you to play me along.''

Later that night, the others gathered in the lounge, taking andย laughing about random things -ranging from Jimin's failed latte art and Hoseok's dance bloopers to Jin's endless dad jokes.

But amidst all of this, Taehyung sat quietly, scrolling through the demo files on his phone.

''Still thinking about the duet?'' Namjoon asked, sitting beside him.

Taehyung hummed, his eyes distant. ''He's not taking it seriously.''ย

Namjoon smiled softly. ''Or maybe he's taking you too seriously.''

Taehyung's hand froze mid-scroll. ''What do you mean by that?''

Namjoon tilted his head, his voice calm. ''You two push and pull too much. Sometimes the tension isn't just about the song.''

But before Taehyung could respond, a bright, careless laughter filled the room like sunlight through glass -Jungkook's laughter.

Taehyung looked up and found him across the room, surrounded by the others with that same mischievous grin on his face.

And yet... for a brief second, Jungkook's eyes flickered toward him. It was just a glance before he looked away, his smile faltering slightly.

Something unspoken hung in the air, a rhythm neither of them could control.

That night, Taehyung sat in the studio alone. The city lights blinked faintly outside, and his reflection in the glass looked tired yet thoughtful.

He played the song again, -their song- the one that had started as a simple duet. But when Jungkook's voice came through the speakers, Taehyung closed his eyes.

It wasn't just music anymore. It was laughter, eyes that lingered too long, and the words that hit too close.

He leaned back, whispering to himself like a confession he didn't want to admit out loud. ''Music doesn't lie, Jungkook. People do.''

Meanwhile in his room down the hall Jungkook lay awake staring at the ceiling, headphones still on.

He replayed Taehyung's words again and again in his mind, each one hitting harder than the last.

He'd always thought flirting was just fun -a way to make Taehyung flustered and to see that rare boxy smile.

But lately... lately, every joke felt real, and every glance felt too long. He ran a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply.

''Stop playing games you can't win,'' Taehyung had said. But Jungkook didn't want to win anymore. He just wanted him.

By morning, rumor's of the duet had gone viral even before the official teaser dropped.

Fans were already calling it 'Taekook's most emotional collab yet.'

The comments flooded in:

"Are they acting or is that real?''

''The chemistry is insane!''

''Jungkook looked totally lost when Tae sang the bridge...''

''TF! Is this Taekook supremacy!?''

"Is this real? The power they hold!"

And maybe, just maybe... they were all a little right. Because sometimes, the line between music and emotion blurs.

Sometimes, a melody tells a truth that words never could.

And for Taehyung and Jungkook, that truth was already playing.
